Vieux Farka Touré, Brooklyn, New York 2023

This is the first time in the eleven years that I have been carrying on this project that I am writing anything about the music in the roundup. I’m a bit nervous and rusty, but I hope you find some value in it.
In lieu of a missive that attempts to sum up the ups and downs of the year 2023, I will just say that I find the world, and life, both sublime and tragic. I hope that you, dear reader, are safe and contented wherever you are.&nbsp;We always have music.
As in years past, my list is broken into three sections, listed alphabetically: (1) my favorite releases of the year, (2) albums released in previous years that I happened upon in the past year, and (3), albums that I discovered by reading other peoples’ Best-Of lists and enjoyed but haven’t been able to sit with for long enough to determine whether they make it into the “favorites” bucket.
I hope you find something here, and, as always, I appreciate any recommendations you might have for me.
(1) My Favorite Releases of the Year 2023:

André 3000 - New Blue Sun (Epic)
Stream it here

<img width="1000" height="1000" width_o="1000" height_o="1000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/10e015055a5fc7ae3ff7f7a5d0feefb19e68fd4da80b208c6d2e99f8f75930de/Andre-3000---New-Blue-Sun.jpg" data-mid="199162598" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/10e015055a5fc7ae3ff7f7a5d0feefb19e68fd4da80b208c6d2e99f8f75930de/Andre-3000---New-Blue-Sun.jpg" />

I don’t care what the critics say—this 90-minute journey through André 3000’s journey of spiritual discovery, or whatever it may be, is an absolute pleasure to experience. Recalling sounds from the likes of Pharoah Sanders, Laraaji, and Terry Riley, the album features collaborations with some favorites of mine, Sam Gendel and Mary Lattimore. It’s encouraging to see people—even those with the ample resources to do so without much personal or financial risk—step out of their comfort zones and try something new.

Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer, Shahzad Ismaily - Love in Exile (Verve)

Buy it here

<img width="1280" height="1280" width_o="1280" height_o="1280" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/ecfa6182e00f7cec07c5e62e70737bda5c8adeab741ffea52025cb5805aef404/Arooj-Aftab--Vijay-Iyer--Shahzad-Ismaily---Love-in-Exile-copy.jpg" data-mid="199162802" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/ecfa6182e00f7cec07c5e62e70737bda5c8adeab741ffea52025cb5805aef404/Arooj-Aftab--Vijay-Iyer--Shahzad-Ismaily---Love-in-Exile-copy.jpg" />
This album is a live recording of an improvised studio performance, and those moments of spontaneity are so tangible, clear, and serene. Over the past couple of years, I have been making an effort to familiarize myself with the classical music of my Indian heritage, and to hear the many echoes of what I have been studying appear in a contemporary mode is an experience that helps me to feel further rooted in my identity. Vijay Iyer tends towards jazz piano in his solo career, Berklee alum Arooj Aftab employs experimental Urdu ghazal to create transcendent sounds in the vein of Hindustani Classical, and Shahzad Ismaily, who I’m admittedly the least familiar with, is a collaborative artist well-known for working with experimental composers throughout the US. What follows from this collaboration between these three artists is a sublime journey through each of the artists’ diverse disciplines converging into a reflective meld of diasporic sound.

B. Cool-Aid / Pink Siifu / Ahwlee - Leather Blvd. (Lex Records)
Buy it here

<img width="1200" height="1200" width_o="1200" height_o="1200" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/5db3fcf4320fe9f4a108842417c8456ed288b16ebeedffc0fb78ff73632a0ee4/B.-Cool-Aid--Pink-Siifu--Ahwlee---Leather-Blvd.jpg" data-mid="199162909" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/5db3fcf4320fe9f4a108842417c8456ed288b16ebeedffc0fb78ff73632a0ee4/B.-Cool-Aid--Pink-Siifu--Ahwlee---Leather-Blvd.jpg" />
I’ve always been a sucker for Guru’s (of Gang Starr) Jazzmatazz series. Leather Blvd. transported me to that funky place in which hip-hop plays with and reflects on its origins. With the resurgence we’re seeing of so many 90’s-era trends, I have yet to come across many projects that rekindle the flames of the boombap sound. Ahwlee’s J Dilla-recalling production relies heavily on the 1-2, infusing the tracks with homemade arrangements through his choice to not lean heavily on samples, instead favoring his own loops and stems. It’s a sound that brings to mind Coltrane’s jazz and D’Angelo’s R&amp;B. Siifu, for his part, leans more D’Angelo crooning than Guru staccato. This is one sexy record.
Bar Italia - Tracey Denim (Matador)

Buy it here

<img width="1200" height="1200" width_o="1200" height_o="1200" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/5ac85d8c680af7416c7cc1cbe7bf55bdfb94a13007b82f792910f395e7025aa9/Bar-Italia---Tracey-Denim.jpg" data-mid="199220608" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/5ac85d8c680af7416c7cc1cbe7bf55bdfb94a13007b82f792910f395e7025aa9/Bar-Italia---Tracey-Denim.jpg" />
Another fantastic album that harkens back to the ‘90s, evoking the bare guitar riffing of Sonic Youth, nodding to the ‘60s pop references of Broadcast, and calling to mind moments of My Bloody Valentine’s noise and Slowdive’s downtempo approach to shoegaze. The album is decidedly minimal, even raw. Tracey Denim’s vocals are shared between the band’s three members, Nina Cristante, Jezmi Tarik Fehmi, and Sam Fenton, each bringing a distinct cadence and style to the record’s 15 post-punk-inspired tracks.
Bill Orcutt - Jump On It (Palilalia)

His electronic record, The Anxiety of Symmetry, for which he developed his own software, is unlike anything I’ve heard from him before. It recalls Schoenberg and Philip Glass, and I absolutely recommend it. Jump On It made the list simply because I found myself listening to it more. For this record, the former Harry Pussy guitarist uses only acoustic guitar for his reverberant creations and creates a style that is, for me, distinctively American. In it, I hear folk stylings reminiscent of John Fahey and Jack Rose. It is a more primitive, calm, and harmonic work than other recent albums like Music for Four Guitars, which relied heavily on the dissonance created between the many different electric loops. Jump On It is a serene journey.
Blue Lake - Sun Arcs (Tonal Union Records)

Blue Lake’s Sun Arcs are aptly evoked through shimmering ripples of guitar and gentle, driving melodies.

Daniel Bachman - When the Roses Come Again (Three Lobed Recording)

<img width="700" height="700" width_o="700" height_o="700" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e8391f9de7570c30ca6b138d7fd5b87561b2d7ee14e9c275bad6bbea0fc2dbc0/Daniel-Bachman---When-The-Roses-Come-Again.jpeg" data-mid="199227819" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/700/i/e8391f9de7570c30ca6b138d7fd5b87561b2d7ee14e9c275bad6bbea0fc2dbc0/Daniel-Bachman---When-The-Roses-Come-Again.jpeg" />
Is Folk Ambient a genre? Because if it isn’t, Bachman created it. When the Roses Come Again is an incredible fusion of guitar, field recordings, a de-fretted banjo, and an Appalachian mouth bow, and while many of the pieces lean more atmospheric, they still manage to capture elements and moments of the most magestic Americana.
DJ Danifox - Ansiedade (Principe)Buy it here

They continue to release genre-bending, structure-defying dance inspired by the global sounds of Lisbon batida, Angolan kuduro, Brazilian baile funk, Cabo Verde funaná, East Indies soca, and more. On Ansiedade, DJ Danifox leans batida, weaving an understated club &amp; downtempo record that layers syncopated tin-drum and panpipes over textured, dank basement club rhythms.

Fever Ray - Radical Romantics (Rabid Records)

<img width="1280" height="1280" width_o="1280" height_o="1280" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4f6ed3fdd2a9817768406e7021d8753fec35ad1665ed375b64d327a9895f16a5/Fever-Ray---Radical-Romantics-copy.jpg" data-mid="199234635" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4f6ed3fdd2a9817768406e7021d8753fec35ad1665ed375b64d327a9895f16a5/Fever-Ray---Radical-Romantics-copy.jpg" />
I was a freshman in college when I heard The Knife’s “Heartbeats” for the first time, and to say that it defined an era of my life would be an understatement. Radical Romantics is&nbsp;the third album by Fever Ray, the solo project of The Knife’s Swedish frontperson, Karin Dreijer. While I have enjoyed their previous releases, nothing has come as close to the The Knife-era nostalgia I’ve ached for for all these years. Produced with help from Principe’s Nidia, Radical Romantics recalls the textured and stabbing synths from 2003’s Deep Cuts but brings it into a new era. Maintaining thematic focuses of love and heartbreak, this cavernous record manages to dig deep into the expanse of human experience while remaining upbeat and eminently danceable.

Fridge - Happiness (Text Records)

It was re-released this year, however, to mark its 22nd anniversary, and I discovered it this year. Fridge is a pseudo-post-rock/kraut/jazz trio helmed by Kieran Hebden, who would later go on to be better known as Four Tet (lately experiencing somewhat of a renaissance himself.)&nbsp;On Happiness, Fridge created a record that is sprawling, minimal, and exploratory.&nbsp;Its track names leave little to the imagination when it comes to their instrumentation: “Drum Machines &amp; Glockenspiel” is a 13-minute foray into the gradual buildup of layers upon layers of both these instruments. “Harmonics” conjures early Aphex Twin and uses a guitar and accompanying harmonics to create a playful yet somber atmosphere. In “Cut Up Piano &amp; Xylophone,” a colorful landscape is created with digitally chopped piano and xylophone samples. This meditative album offers a lot of insight into what would later become staples of Four Tet’s sonic style.
Gunn/Truscinski/Nace - Glass Band (Three Lobed Recordings)

I’ve loved everything that Gunn/Truscinski Duo have put out—their last record&nbsp;Soundkeeper made my best-of list in 2020—and on Glass Band, the duo of Gunn on guitar and Truscinski on drums has expanded to include guitarist Bill Nace, the experimental guitarist perhaps best known for his work with Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon as Body/Head. The result is a meeting of musical minds recorded in one session, a meandering, guitar-driven record of ambient psychedelia.
Marina Herlop - Nekkuja (Pan)

Really, the two are both otherworldy, and I am going with Nekkuja here simply because it was released in 2023. What can I say—I’m the one that makes these arbitrary rules for myself, so I guess I have to follow them! Herlop infuses spindly, harp-driven melodies with the sharp stabs of sound that I have come to associate with so many Pan releases. At times reminiscent of Björk, Marina Herlop layers vocals upon vocals, creating both rhythm and melody. What follows is a dreamlike trip with sharp ups and downs.
Mick Jenkins - The PatienceStream it here

Mick Jenkins is one of the best rappers out there right now. His album Elephant in the Room was on my 2021 list. Although The Patience was released without much fanfare, the record spans Jenkins’s signature, mellow bars style and extends into the harder, angrier flows that are bolstered by a host of guest rappers. The stacatto flow of Freddie Gibbs is featured on the heavy-hitting “Show &amp; Tell,” and the soft, disarming soft attack and long sustain of “Roy G Biv” is emblematic of the record’s dynamism.

If you are someone privileged enough to be able to, sit in your Audi or whatever, lock the doors, and blast it with your car’s Bang &amp; Olufsens. This is an experience. RA called Purelink an “ambient boyband,” presumably because there are three young gentlemen, Tommy Paslaski (aka Concave Reflection), Ben Paulson (aka Kindtree), and Akeem Asani (aka Millia), behind this absolutely delightful and divine project. A friend of mind recommended it for a psychedelic experience recently, and I took him up on the suggestion. This dubby, ambient journey is often formless—pad and texture heavy—but it finds moments of drummed pulse, and I guarantee it will leave you floored.

This five track EP was only released in November, but I have probably listened to it at least 20 times. The trio creates this heady, bubbly rhythm that underlies each song, and then layers on a dublike bass to anchor the piece. On “Brigstow,” one of the album’s instrumental tracks, a dissonant violin moves the music forward over a syncopated, reverberated drumbeat. “Marble Walls” features Clerkin’s ethereal voice above a minimal guitar loop that soon transforms into an almagam of orchestra-backing and an ‘80s fat and funky slapped bass line. Other songs like “The Turning Ground” feature breakbeats with a plucked acoustic guitar that give way to a dubstep wobble and bitcrushed inflections. There is just so much going on, and it all comes together in a simple and clean way. The Bristol trio’s incredible EP somehow manages to draw on a range of artists like Portishead, Broadcast, Stereolab, (maybe even early PJ Harvey???), without sounding derivative. I don’t get the criticism, frankly. NicoJP is a clear grandchild of RZA and The Alchemist; his boombap beats are folded into new forms with smooth piano samples and elegiac saxophone wails. Fahim, for his part, does not shy away from overt Wu-Tang references. The album name aside, he invokes the shogun and the war spear. A diligent and dedicated Wu-Tang disciple, Fahim owes much of the inspiration of his style to Raekwon.(2) Albums Released in Previous Years That I Happened Upon in the Past Year:

Nonetheless, I was very pleased to come across this split/collab. Like any sunn O))) record, expect long, consuming and excruciating dark drones. What makes this record stand out is that it is teeming with Boris’ own dark drones and thrashing guitars, but is also punctuated by unexpected—and rather uncharacteristic—moments of melodic order. In “The Sinking Belle (Blue Sheep),” we even hear a piano backing up a soft and ever-building melancholic anthem. Somehow, despite each band’s penchant for discomfort, Altar is a dark, yet calming record.

To scry is to foretell. In or around the year of 2010, I proclaimed that the saxophone would be a resurgent instrument in the years to come. I was kind of right, only 13 years later it is not necessarily the saxophone that is causing the musical tremors, but the breath-operated MIDI controller. (An exception to this would be Sam Gendel, of course—see my best-of 2022 blueblue). Like André 3000, Pulice is using “digital woodwinds” to create vast soundscapes, though Pulice’s may be a bit more pointed than the Outkast member’s. Pulice’s song “City in a City” is a touching and bright piano and “sax” piece that showcases the record’s lighthearted approach. Like the album’s artwork, a wind carries a song towards a colorful, and comfortable, destination.Fishmans -&nbsp;98.12.28 Otokotachino Wakare (Live) (Universal)

Ok, so apparently this album is so difficult to procure that one can’t even find a decent Google image of the album art for a review on a rarely frequented music blog. I discovered this album on a drive back from CubeSmart Storage™, listening to WFMU. This lovely disc jockey was playing this album in its entirety, and I was struggling to figure out who the hell the band was because this lovely fellow didn’t think to mention the band’s name after his show’s intro, which I had evidently missed. So, here I am, fresh off a joyous trip to Maspeth, Queens, swerving around the BQE while trying to Shazam some obscure live recording of a ‘80s/’90s Japanese outfit, which, it turns out, is named Fishmans. Also, as it turns out, this outfit has an online cult following unlike anything I’ve seen, and with reason.This little review warrants a paragraph break. This Fishmans discovery was one of the greatest I’ve made in recent years. This band, which has a storied history, only ever recorded one studio album. A couple of live albums exist, but by all accounts—including my own, it must be said—Otokotachino Wakare is Fishmans’ acme. The band’s lead singer, Shinji Sato, died at the age of 33, just three months after the performance.What does it sound like? Everything. It is a dub band; it is a post-punk band; at times, it is the Japanese Talking Heads. In “In the Flight,” Sato’s alto transcends the unaffected guitar, bouncing bass, and aching violin to deliver a fragile yet substantial ballad. In “Oh Slime” we hear everything from Fugazi to David Bowie to Broken Social Scene. I can’t recommend this enough.

One of the most important bands in my life has been Portishead, and a.s.o. would not exist were it not for their influence. But Berlin-based trip-hop Australians&nbsp;Lewie Day and Alia Seror-O'Neill don’t stop there. This album is a pastiche that draws from the likes of Massive Attack, Air, Tricky, and plenty of others in the pioneering days of trip-hop, and it’s a fantastic homage to the craft. This album is meant for the afters; for smoke-filled rooms where no one is quite yet ready to go home.

I haven’t had any formal jazz training, but I am a long-time acolyte. This improvisational Chicago recording from the duo of Drazek &amp; Fuscaldo, who are joined by Thymme Jones, Hamid Drake, Tatsu Aoki, and Joshua Abrams, floored me when I first heard it. On “Blossoming,” Fuscaldo’s rounded and resonant basso vocals—which are disarming on their own—echo over Aoki’s plucked shamisen, which is reinforced by Drazek’s vibrato guitar picking. The recording lies somewhere between jazz and krautrock, and at times reminded me of The Velvet Underground’s “Venus in Furs.”

From time to time (and evermore-so, increasingly) I come across a certain type of record that I enjoy, and because I find myself surprised to be enjoying it, I think to myself, “wow, I am getting old.” Travel does that for me. It is, quite literally, white boy jazz. The Necks are a trio of experimental gents from down under who formed the unit in 1987, and&nbsp;Travel is their 19th studio record. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Can, Lamonte Young, and Philip Glass—three foundational musicians in my own journey through music, and perhaps why I have been enjoying this album so much—the trio stirs together minimal, sprawling jazz concoctions that defy typical genre definitions: not entirely minimal in the sense of Lamonte Young; lacking the sometimes ambient leanings of Philip Glass; not quite reaching levels of pure krautrock à la Can. Whatever it is, it’s a joy to experience.
Honorable Mention
Drake - For All The Dogs (Scary Hours Edition)

This may be a controversial opinion, or one that is akin to the edgelords who proclaim they “hate the beatles” (🙋🏽‍♂️), but Drake is severely, incredibly overrated. Most often he is outright bad. However, the last record, For All The Dogs (this album title abhorrent), has been amended with an edition entitled “Scary Hours Edition,” and it’s great. That is *purely*&nbsp;because the certified beat LORD Alan the Chemist aka The Alchemist provided the production for all six tracks on the amendment edition. The Alchemist has been on an incredible run lately. This year, some of his silky-smooth but chopped-up throwback style collaborations included solo-produced records with Earl Sweatshirt (stellar album, though, unlike some previous releases in recent years, not quite best-of material), Roc Marciano, Larry June, Domo Genesis, and a whole host of other projects with established and up-and-coming rappers. Though it’s still distinctively his, his style has shifted over the years, becoming something more fluid and less measured. He works with a lot of the Griselda crew who I think embody this new wave. It’s safe to say that Alan the Chemist is back in the building, and he gonna make it. Also throwing this video in for good measure.
Best wishes for peace and love in the year 2024.

Jim White and Marisa Anderson, Le Poisson Rouge, New York 2024

From shit times emerges great art, and 2024 was a banner year for both shit times and so many marvelous musical creations. Quick fact for you: more albums were released in one day this year than in the entire year of 1989. That’s a fantastic thing. With the ease of access to music production tools and the consequent exponential growth of musical output, musicians and lovers of music are creating and listening more than ever before. The resultant effect of this is that genre lines are more indistinct than ever. The levels of interesting exploration and experimentation in the pieces I’ve listened to over the past year surpass any period that I can recall since I began this little practice. If nothing else, we have much more beautiful music in store.

I have to concede as well that I have probably listened to more music this year than ever before. Voraciously. New life changes and another transcontinental move have given me a lot of time, for better or for worse, to consume new things, and much of that energy has been channeled into the safety and comfort I find in musical discovery. It is possible that this insatiable consumption and exploration has led me to draw some elevated conclusions about the state of music in general, but I do feel optimistic about the musical boundaries I hear expanding. So, this year’s list is long, and selected from the hundreds of albums I listened to.

As I wrote last year, I hope that you are safe and as content as can be, wherever you are. Despite the fact that this annual piece of writing is about music, it doesn’t feel right to omit mention of the boundless despair that seems to be gathering steam as it bulldozes its way through so many facets of life and planet. Watching these many tragedies unfold day after day has eroded my somehow enduring and perhaps naive sense of optimism and faith in humanity; nevertheless I am in some way able to maintain a hold on a hope for something better to come.
This list is in four parts. (1) Studio Albums, (2) Live Recordings, (3) Reissues, (4) Discoveries Released in Years Past. Because I’ve opted to make this year’s selection so extensive, not every album will have a review per se, but I’ve selected some songs from each to highlight. As always, the below is in no particular order and presents no hierarchy–I find rankings for things like these to be objectively preposterous and it is a peeve of mine at this time of year, especially. I welcome any recommendations or callouts of any glaring oversights I might have made.
Thank you for reading and for listening. I hope that you are able to find some new universes here. Free Palestine.

A solid fixture of the Jim O’Rourke cadre, his career as a guitarist and percussionist has spanned everything from harsh noise (w/ Merzbow), drone (w/ Sun O))), to shimmering ambient (one of my favorite pieces of all time) to musique concrète, and to whatever you want to call the funky, thematic project that defies easy categorization, undertaken with his longtime collaborators Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin.
&nbsp; &nbsp; Ghosted ii continues where its predecessor left off. Largely propelled forward by Berthling’s driving and purposeful bass, it is augmented by the exploratory meanderings of Werliin’s drumming and pulled together into cohesive swarming chapters of dub, funk, jazz, and ambient with Ambarchi’s shimmering guitar. The piece lurches forward through time and space–from moments of somber peace to moments of rhapsodic frenzy–with each artist embarking on new excursions here and there before finding themselves united again in the bassy refrain that anchors their collective journey.
&nbsp; &nbsp; I’m thinking of Alice Coltrane’s Journey in Satchinanda, أحمد [Ahmed], and even Dorothy Ashby. There’s a similar sense of interconnectedness and transcendence, a blend of groove, experimentation, and spirituality that makes Ghosted ii&nbsp;both expansive and deeply grounding. This is music that feels timeless and boundaryless, intricate interplay to lose yourself to in its forward momentum.

I admit it took me a while to see the appeal, but like with ML Buch’s Suntub last year, I finally came around, and, oh GOOD GOLLY! was I bowled over when it clicked for me.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Rosali, the superb North Carolinian talent, has crafted an album that spans so many eras and forms of America folk and anthemic-ballad rock. I have disparate notes for a longer piece I was planning to write about this, but because it’s almost the end of the year and I am under a self-imposed time crunch to publish this, I will spare my enormous audience of slogging through my writing.
&nbsp; &nbsp; On Bite Down, Rosali conjures the work of prolific artists working in the medium of “Americana” without mimicry, succeeding in making it her very own. Tinges of Adrianne Lenker are found in songs like “Hills on Fire;” The Velvet Underground is present in “Is It Too Late;” Stevie Knicks makes a proverbial appearance in “Hopeless”; Jessica Pratt and Cate Le Bon’s influences can be heard in the title track “Bite Down;” Neil Young is at the heart of “Change is in the Form;” even The Rolling Stones (or maybe the Beatles, given the cheesy guitar solo?) feature in “Slow Pain.” Drawing from the best (ok, maybe not if we’re including the Beatles–I hold a contrarian opinion about that band, but I am willing to acknowledge their cultural significance), Rosali has created something wholly new and timeless with Bite Down.

Listening to one hour and twenty minutes of brain-frying, soul pummeling, guitar-driven thump. On In E, the amorphous collective of Austin-based musicians (whose instruments include a violin and a bowed guitar) explore the creation of singular sound, driving powerful riffs that continue into eternity but never tire. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
A loose homage to Terry Riley’s In C, in which ten musicians layered short phrases in a minimalistic drone to create a raag-like effect, In E achieves a similar all-consuming quality. Water Damage’s music pushes the boundaries of repetition, pulling you into a strangely all-consuming yet comforting abyss where all time and thought dissolves.

This opening feels less like a question posed to a partner and more like an internal monologue, a fragmented dialogue with the self.

&nbsp; &nbsp; The album’s sonic landscapes balance vulnerability and strength, often through unexpected contrasts. On “Staying here,” Sonne pairs stabbing, fragmentary synth arpeggios with lyrics that linger in the mind: “everything is unreal but I’m not going anywhere.” The effect is paradoxical—both disarming and comforting, as if refusing to resolve the tension between fragility and determination. The fractured, shimmering synths echo the emotional precariousness of the words, yet there’s an undeniable warmth in their repetition, as if to ground the listener in the present despite the chaos.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Great Doubt probes deeply personal terrain through sonic landscapes that recall the delicate yet emotionally charged works of Sonne’s contemporaries and occasional collaborators ML Buch and Tirzah. On the triphop-heavy “Boost,” Sonne sets down her viola—her primary instrument—and picks up the drums, crafting a rhythmically dense, Tirzah-esque pulse reminiscent of Devotion. The track’s stripped-down yet urgent beat underscores the tension between restraint and release that defines much of the album.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Sonne’s viola, her instrument of training and choice, when it does appear, is anything but ornamental. It winds through tracks like a narrative thread, introducing textures and moods that elevate the sparse electronics. The interplay between acoustic and synthetic elements creates a sense of vulnerability—each sound feels exposed, yet integral to the whole. Great Doubt is an album that resists resolution.

Olhos D’água, a journey composed with fellow Brazilian guitarist Daniel Santiago, traces a soft, delicate arc across the necks of Nascimento’s 6-, 7-, 8-, and 10-string guitars, guiding the listener through the intricate floral petalwork of bossa nova-esque meanderings.

&nbsp; &nbsp; “Olhos D’água” translates to “Eyes of Water,” and the album is liquid in form. Its music flows like a gentle stream, pausing to reflect on the ripples that form in stillness. Guitar harmonics and suggestions figure heavily in the album, shimmering like a light drizzle, while Nascimento’s restraint and subtlety create a refreshing, meditative breeze.

&nbsp; &nbsp; His other two releases this year lean into collaboration. The Room, co-written with visionary saxophonist Sam Gendel (also on this year’s list), is a decidedly funkier affair, though it too toes the line of the restraint that is so characteristic of Nascimento’s music. His latest album, Harmônicos, was written with the Japanese guitarist Shin Sasakubo, whose work is deeply rooted in the music of northern South America. Nascimento is an artist who is reaching the height of his powers, and I’m so looking forward to what he continues to create.

They are part of a fresh generation of musicians who continue the storied British tradition of creating the unheard-of—conjuring radical possibilities out of the gray and dreary skies of the Isles they inhabit.
&nbsp; &nbsp; What can I say that hasn’t already been written by countless others? Perhaps something personal: seeing the former Glasgow art-school trio live in London this fall was revelatory. Without hyperbole, seeing Still House Plants play live was one of the most incredible and profound live music experiences I’ve had. What struck me most was how deeply R&amp;B-infused their sound is. Frontperson Jess Hickie-Kallenbach’s voice—distinctive, soulful, unforgettable—evokes shades of Nina Simone. At times, her vocals act almost like a triggered sample, repeating phrases with unwavering tempo and pitch, layering an eerie, meditative quality over the chaos of Finlay Clark’s glitched-out guitar riffs and David Kennedy’s 1/16-off-tempo drums. It’s a juxtaposition that feels simultaneously deliberate and disorienting.
&nbsp; &nbsp; The resulting sound is singular, yet it gestures toward a lineage of artists like Bill Orcutt and Zach Hill, while drawing loose parallels to movements like No Wave and slowcore. Fans of Moin (whose album, You Never End also earned a spot on this list) might find a similar affinity here, as both bands explore the deconstruction of traditional rock frameworks into something sharper, stranger, and deeply experimental. Yet even with these comparisons, Still House Plants stand apart. They fuse disparate sounds and genres into something entirely new, a foundry furnace forging metallic, otherworldly creations that shimmer and distort.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; I had the absolute pleasure of seeing Myriam Gendron play at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge in May, where she opened for Jim White and Marisa Anderson (who were also fantastic). I had passively listened to the record once or twice before the show, but it wasn’t until I saw her playing the songs on stage that night that the weight of her work, and her significance as a folk artist, began to wash over me. In one of those really special intimate moments that occur on occasion between an artist and their audience, she opened up about the impetus for many of the songs on Mayday. She told of how, after a long and exhausting tour during which she often found herself alone, she returned to her home of Montreal for the first time since the death of her mother and was faced with the immense exhaustion and grief that that carried. In “Long Way Home,” Gendron’s low and tranquil-yet-haunting voice–part Catherine Ribeiro, part Leonard Cohen–carries that emotion so powerfully. We were all in tears.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Myriam Gendron began her professional life as a book dealer and copy editor and is a deep lover of poetry, citing writers like Dorothy Parker and Henry Miller as influences from which she has repurposed stanzas and drawn inspiration for her own lyrics. Gendron, who sings in both English and French, is a folk musician in the traditional sense, carrying on the convention of revisiting canonical songs from the folk artists of yesterday. In many of her songs she takes on these old standards, imbuing them with new layers and the raw emotions, be they sorrowful or rejoicing, that she is so captivatingly able to bring forth. Her sources are wide and sometimes surprising, often plumbed from the likes of Alan Lomax’s archives or Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music. Mayday’s opener, the instrumental track, “There is No East or West,” is an homage to the John Fahey tune, “In Christ There is No East or West.” “Dorothy’s Blues” is drawn from Parker’s poetry. The song “Lullay, Lullay” is a reimagining of “The Coventry Carol,” a 16th century English Christmas carol about the Massacre of the Innocents, in which King Herod orders all male infants to be killed. The song originally takes the form of a lullaby from a mother to her condemned child, but Gendron has repurposed it as a sort of goodbye dirge to her own mother. The title of Mayday has moving significance itself. In an interview with B. Arthur from the great&nbsp;Aquarium Drunkard, Gendron explains, “Mayday. It expresses you know, those days that are so sunny and beautiful. But Mayday is also a distress signal. So... there’s all of that. My mother died in May and my daughter was born in May. It’s a month of many contrasts.”
&nbsp; &nbsp; The album is studded with musicians’ musicians: guitarists Bill Nace and Marisa Anderson (absolute shredders), drummer Jim White (prolific, check out his new supergroup project The Hard Quartet with Stephen Malkmus, Matt Sweeney, and Emmett Kelly), and out-there saxophonist Zoh Amba (incredible, also a very weird, memorable, and captivating performer) all make appearances across the album’s 10 tracks, with Amba delivering a frenzied and wailing solo at the end of the album’s closer, “Berceuse.” Mayday is an album enchanting, fighting, and full of depth. With it, like the inspirations she mines from, Gendron cements herself into the company of the greatest North American folk singers in history.

&nbsp; &nbsp; The name alone was enough to sell me on this album. A play on Aphex Twin’s seminal album Selected Ambient Works, Jambient draws similar inspiration to the creation of contemplative, atmospheric landscapes. Only here, we’re not looking inside our heads as much as we are looking out at tumbleweeds rolling across windblown prairies, dusty mesas, and the endless expanse of the American hinterlands. Selected Jambient Works, Vol. 1 is a collaborative work between a trio of musicians with a hefty body of work behind each of them. Peter Silberman of The Antlers (whose 2009 album Hospice is simply incredible–a landmark in emotionally resonant indie of the late aughts), David Moore of Bing &amp; Ruth (who is well-versed in creating musical vistas, albeit with a piano-centered approach), and Nicholas Principe of Port St. Willow. Together, they weave a cozy sonic horse blanket that feels both vast and intimate, evoking the desolate beauty of the frontier while carrying an emotional weight that lingers long after the last note fades.
&nbsp; &nbsp; In last year’s list, I wrote about my discovery of “ambient country” with Daniel Bachman’s When the Roses Come Again, and Jambient Works certainly fits squarely into that categorization. A heady, moving, and transforming album–one that makes me want to saddle up my horse and amble slowly westwards towards the setting sun. And the best part? This is only Volume One…!

With Purelink’s Signs putting ambient on the map for so many, the label continues to expand the boundaries of atmospheric sound with Trellis by Lifted. The former PAN artists, led by Future Times founder Max D and Matt Papich (aka Co La), function as a rotating supergroup of electronic, ambient, and experimental musicians. The group’s members stem from the vibrant DMV/Baltimore-indie scene which spawned acts like Animal Collective and Ponytail. Over the years, contributors have included Beatrice Dillon, Dustin Wong, and Tim Kinsella, among others.

&nbsp; &nbsp; On Trellis, the group ventures into what I can only describe as post-jazz. Is that a thing yet? Blurring the lines between ambient and freeform composition, the album navigates oblique, unmoored soundscapes imbued with live instrumentation and electronic elements that feel spontaneous yet remarkably cohesive. Dustin Wong’s shimmering guitar explorations provide a loose anchor at times, while Jeremy Hyman’s dynamic drumming often steers the compositions, pulling the pieces into unexpected directions.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Reverb and texture are integral here, as seemingly disparate elements collide and coalesce into elegant clouds of improvisation. The result is music that feels free yet intentional, a comforting yet expansive sonic journey that highlights the incredible range of talent at Lifted’s core. Trellis is another triumph for both the band and the label.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Earlier this year we had a team of movers come into our NYC apartment to pack up all of our belongings in preparation for our move to the UK. They arrived at 8am on a Sunday morning, and these guys were like 22 years old, max. One of them was so hungover that he shut the office door behind him and went to sleep on the floor (I discovered this later when I went in to grab something, and, reader, I assure you, when I saw this I closed that door as softly as I could to make sure he could continue getting the sleep he clearly needed).

&nbsp; &nbsp; I was searching for some music to put on the speakers--something that might be agreeable to everyone as they packed up the physical contents of our lives. Total Blue had come out a week or so before. I’d listened to it once already and figured that, while these kids might find it a little spacey or weird, it would certainly not offend. About 20 minutes into the album, one of the dudes came up to me and asked, “What are we listening to?” Instinctively, I went on the defensive, ready to justify my choice. “Umm… it’s this jazz group Total Blue from LA,” I said, cagily. “This is fucking dope,” he said.

Its roster and curation of music are unblemished, and its prolific output this year only reinforces that fact. Small Medium Large was recorded at the now defunct Los Angeles’ Enfield Tennis Academy—a storied avant-jazz bar and the site of Jeff Parker’s eponymous album. On this release, the group ventures into kosmische tangents, Afrobeat polyrhythms, and beyond, showcasing the label’s commitment to boundary-pushing music.

&nbsp; &nbsp; The ensemble features a powerhouse lineup: saxophonist Josh Johnson, synthesist Jeremiah Chiu, guitarist Gregory Uhlmann, bassist Anna Butterss (whose 2024 album, Mighty Vertebrate, is also on this list), and percussionist Booker Stardrum. Butterss and Johnson also contributed to Jeff Parker’s The Way Out of Easy, one of the year’s best albums and a clear standout on this list (see Live Albums, below).

Name dropping the likes of Pol Pot and Ahmedinijad, Hommy’s globalist critique and acerbic wit bleeds through the album’s 17 tracks. In GUGGENHEIM JEUNE, he raps, “ain’t no peace accord, lord, I got the piece in the Accord squeezing in your door, now you even vegan in your thoughts.” Studded with features from the likes of underground kings Roc Marciano (I loved his recent album with the Alchemist The Elephant Key), Tha God Fahim, Your Old Droog, 03 Greedo, as well as fellow Haitian multihyphenate Kaytranada. &nbsp; &nbsp; RICHAXXHAITIAN veers from boombap to the off-kilter flows defining of the Griselda crew. Many of the tracks on RICHAXXHAITIAN are produced by SadhuGold, the equally elusive (and in my opinion underappreciated) guru behind so many blazing Griselda tracks. Run, don’t walk.

Over its hour and 18 minutes, the album hurls the listener through a kaleidoscope of free jazz improvisation, jagged post-rock textures, and haunting folk stylings, crafting an experience that feels utterly singular. It’s an intense and often exhausting ride, but one that rewards persistence with new layers of depth and discovery each time you return to it.

Josh Johnson’s sax, Anna Butterss’s bass, and Jamire Williams’s drums all take turns driving the music forward, while Parker’s guitar alternates between subtle textures and bold riffs. The album eventually lands in a dub-inspired groove—heavy, hypnotic, and totally unexpected—proving Parker’s ability to push jazz into exciting new territory.

&nbsp; &nbsp; On the site formerly known as Twitter (and now on BlueSky), I follow Gary Sullivan, aka @Bodegapop, a prolific collector and curator of predominantly Arab cassettes and vinyl he picks up from his extensive global travels and, more pertinently to his alias’ namesake, from mom and pop bodegas with music collections around New York City. I’ve been listening to Gary’s fantastic show, Bodega Pop, on WFMU for quite some time, and am regularly sent into new journeys of musical discovery from both his program and recommendations online. When he one day posted “Anyone in the NYC area interested in a listening party focused on Arabic bangers &amp; novelty records from the 1960s-70s? Thinking about pizza, beer, records, for a couple to a few hours in Astoria on March 2, 3, 8, or 9. If 5-10 folks are interested, we'll make it happen,” I raised my proverbial hand immediately.

&nbsp; &nbsp; A couple weeks later, I found myself in the warm and welcoming home of Zora and Peter, Gary’s friends and fellow global music journeyists, sipping esoteric liqueur and slamming pizza while listening to and discussing a wide range of retro jams from across the Arab world. I was pleased to find that I was in the company of kindred spirits from all over the world. It was really a true delight to spend an evening surrounded by people with a deep love of music and traveling the world through sound (all were also prolific global travelers themselves). There were our hosts Zora, a travel writer whose work focuses on exploration in the Arab world, and Peter, a professor of criminal justice at John Jay with some pretty radical ideas for justice reform. Among the guests were Shiloh, a radio show host and Chinatown vinyl purveyor at Paradise of Replica;&nbsp; Tatyana, flautist in a traditional British Isles music trio and owner of the Astoria record store Pancakes; Ariyan, an Iranian-American musician and founder of the Technowruz party and member of the bands Googoosh Dolls and Tar Of; Stephen, another traveler and monthly radio host of Extended Fam Radio; and Jemayel, crypto researcher and guitarist in the LA postrock, jazz-fusion band Charts and Maps. We were all brought together by someone on the internet, so the lesson here is that this is always a safe thing and advisable thing to do.
&nbsp; &nbsp; I discovered Sherifa Fadel that evening, and I’m not sure if it was then or later (also through Bodega Pop) that I found Sabreen, a mesmerizing Palestinian band from Jerusalem who put out this record in 1987, during the onset of the first Intifada. Sabreen, or “those awaiting,” create songs that are at turns mournful but steadfast in their celebration and resistance. The song “Improvisation on Moondance” recalls the enormous amounts of cultural exchange between the Arab world, the Maghreb, and the roots it laid in Spanish music. The instrumental piece takes all sorts of twists and turns, venturing into realms of flamenco and even something I might dare call reminiscent of bluegrass. “Eash Ya Kdeesh” oscillates between lament and determined march, and I can’t help but think of the strength and will of the people who hold on to their ancestral homeland against the brutal and depraved might of empire.

Nadah El Shazly - Laina Taini&nbsp;(One Little Independent Records)Buy it here
&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;What El Shazly is creating resists my own impulse to impose tidy musical categories, instead demanding to be encountered on its own terms. Ethereal vocals drift over beats that recall Fatima Al Qadiri’s explorations of East–West tension. On Laini Tani (which translates to “find me again”), the Egyptian-Canadian musician is deeply engaged in this crossover: she sings in Egyptian Arabic, with melodies that at times gesture toward classical mawwāl forms, her voice employing traditional modulation techniques even as the ground beneath it shifts. That delicacy is paired with deconstructed club elements, rhythms and textures that misalign, blur, and quietly reform. Heady, soft, and beautiful, this is a record that deserved far more attention than it received.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Ghosted III picks up where II left off, and it doesn’t disappoint. Endlessly listenable—the trio of guitarist Ambarchi, drummer Berthling, and bassist Werliin, plays in delightful harmony with one another, with the same caliber of heady departures from each of these incredibly talented artists taking shape across the album’s slow burn. David Grubbs - Whistle From Above&nbsp;(Drag City)Buy it here&nbsp; &nbsp; An all-instrumental departure from the Gastr del Sol vet (who recently collaborated with Water Damage on the collective’s latest LP Instruments), Whistle From Above is a highly listenable—and at times downright hypnotic—excursion into an Americana-inflected landscape tinged with ghosts. Supported by some equally heavy hitting music legends and the unexpected instrumental entries of cello, trumpets, harp, analog electronics, and piano (among others, of course), the album is a cerebral and contemplative journey that spans the breadth of Grubbs’ musical inclinations.

&nbsp; &nbsp; It’s not just me here, the internet is seemingly in unanimous agreement on this: Los Thuthanaka is something incredible. A project created by musician siblings Chuiquimamani-Condori and Joshua Chuquimia Crampton—who are each incredible in their own right—their dizzying (and unmastered) collaboration is a frenetic, logic-defying collage of genres and time. At times panic-inducing, at times serene, Los Thuthanaka takes the listener to somewhere I guarantee they have not been before. Combine the syncopated samples of Indigenous Andean percussion with loops of heavily distorted guitar and layer daub after daub of stabbing synth and gregarious radio DJ tags over one another and you might start to form a fuzzy picture of what’s going on here. If it seems hard to imagine, that’s simply because it is—this needs to be heard to be understood. Listen if you like: Grupo Aymara, listening-as-ritual

On Dream City, it really feels like esteemed musicians Chris Forsyth, Douglas McCombs, and Mikel Patrick Avery were just out there having so much fun. Joanne Robertson - Blurrr (AD 93)
Buy it here&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; Blurrr opens with “Ghost,” and it’s not far-fetched to imagine this as the ghost of the Dead Deer that Liz Harris’ Grouper&nbsp;Dragged Up a Hill way back in the aughts. The music grows out of a space Harris began building more than twenty years ago, and Robertson taps into and expands the sense of shimmering isolation that took root in Grouper’s work.

But this record isn’t indebted to Harris alone. Echoes of grunge-era vocals and power chords softly pepper the album as well. “Why Me” channels Cobain or J. Mascis, while Robertson’s frequent collaborator Dean Blunt looms over the record’s quick nine tracks, each imbued with the DIY, minimalist, figure-it-out-as-you-go aesthetic he so often conjures. None of this is to say that Blurrr is derivative. Robertson creates music that is wholly her own, despite—or perhaps because of—the many influences that lead us here. It’s a mesmerizing, transportive, and nostalgic album, the likes of which I haven’t encountered in quite some time.

A handful of tracks are supported by the phenomenal experimental cellist Oliver Coates, who adds depth and density to the otherwise sparse compositions that define the record. “Gown,” in particular, ascends to near-orchestral heights, giving Robertson the space to explore the further reaches of her seemingly limitless ability. Beyond her work as a musician, Robertson is also an accomplished artist and poet. Her visual practice tends toward large-scale, abstract oil paintings (which I very much yearn to collect), and she is represented by major galleries in both Paris and New York. If I were to break my own album-ranking rules, this one would land very near the top.Listen if you like:&nbsp;Dean Blunt and company, half-erased folk songs, Grouper’s joyous despair, Jessica Pratt’s introspection, AD 93

&nbsp; &nbsp;This one is FUN. The Sorcerers are a quartet of white guys from Leeds crafting some of the unexpectedly teeth grittingly funkiest, head bopping Ethio-inspired jazz around. When I first listened to this I knew nothing about the band, but, if I’m honest, this flatcap-toting group of Brits is not who I was picturing behind these grooves. It just goes to show you that music can be transcendental (and that there are some interesting things going on in Leeds).

Eiko Ishibashi - Antigone (Drag City)Buy it here&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;With Antigone, Eiko Ishibashi returns to a more playful, left-field pop sensibility after a run of orchestral and soundtrack work (including the absolutely terrific Evil Does Not Exist and Drive My Car—both movies meeting the high bar of the music), without abandoning the compositional depth that’s come to define her prolific output. Ishibashi’s breathy vocals move easily between syncopated drums, searching woodwind solos, sparse piano, and, at moments, the sweep of a full orchestra, weighting the record with a certain lightness. On “Trial,” a thumping, funky bassline anchors the song, recalling a strange but satisfying midpoint between Talk Talk’s elasticity and George Clinton’s cosmic funk, a juxtaposition that recurs through the album’s eight pieces. The string and horn arrangements—a collaboration with her frequent comrade in instruments, and partner, Jim O’Rourke—unfold with a palpable softness and restraint. “Mona Lisa” drifts into languid, buttery territory, its mellow layers and sultry saxophone flourishes nodding toward ’90s R&amp;B. Flur - Plunge (Latency)Buy it here&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;One of my favorite musicians of all time is Dorothy Ashby. The way she maneuvers the harp—an instrument I instinctively associate with classical tradition rather than a conduit to outer space—into a vehicle for amniotic, interdimensional jazz planes is nothing short of alchemical. It would be an overstatement to claim Flur achieve the same effect, but on Plunge the London trio extend their reach deep into the astral. Miriam Adefris’ drifting, resonant harp lines stretch across wide horizons, while Isaac Robertson coils searching saxophone phrases into slow-moving vortices. On drums, Dillon Harrison threads rhythms that are at once abstract and grounding, periodically drawing the music softly back toward earth. In the kosmische interstitial space the trio explore, absence and presence are held in careful balance, moments of pregnant silence ringing out with the weight of notes themselves.Listen if you like: Dorothy Ashby’s jazz expansiveness, Alice Coltrane’s journeys into the astral plane, Pharoah Sanders’ widening gyres,&nbsp;The Necks’ contemporary cosmic restraint&nbsp;Plunge by Flur

Orcutt Shelley Miller - S/T (Silver Current)Buy it here
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;An absolutely thunderous anchor of a bassline rips open Orcutt Shelley Miller’s eponymous album, recorded live at LA’s (and formerly New York’s—those were the years) Zebulon in April 2024. In no time, Bill Orcutt’s signature high-end wail begins to braid itself through Russell Miller’s arpeggiating lows, with the thrashing tempo upheld by Steve Shelley (of Sonic Youth fame) on the cans. “Unsafe at Any Speed” tears into a classic Orcuttian riff of beautiful, freeform guitar phrasing, but what sets this apart from his solo work is the way it’s underpinned by full-fledged rock and roll.

This rock and roll megalith of a record is a far cry from the scorched-earth, feral punk of Orcutt’s former ’90s band Harry Pussy; the Orcutt Shelley Miller strain of rock is decidedly more accessible. (In fact, listen closely and you’ll catch segments that sound like they could have been clipped from the breakdown of the most lathered moment of a live Sabbath show in 1976—meaning even your parents might be able to get down with this noise!) This recording stands as a testament to Orcutt’s prolific output in recent years. The veteran guitarist has been dropping dime after dime of apex-quality, mesmerizing shreds, including what has become—without a doubt—the best Christmas album of the decade (NB: it’s the only post-Peanuts released Christmas album I’ve listened to, also I don’t think it technically is a Christmas album, but it sure does feel right around the tree). With more planned for 2026, now’s the time to pay attention if you haven’t already.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;A lot of music writers panned this—I don’t understand the disdain. I found it to be a patient, swelling album, dotted with moments of 90s new age synth pads and Enya-esque interludes. Good fun for an ambient record, if you’re asking me.

Operating in a similar, shadowy margin of club music, Rhythm Immortal trades forward motion for atmosphere, its eroded, submerged beats echoing Stott’s low-end introspection and Sa Pa’s ambient drift. The record, which features a track with the phenomenal Voice Actor, hovers in suspension, rewarding listeners willing to sit within its dark, enveloping embrace.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Good vibes only, as the kids say. Even the searching, minor-key piano line of “Shadow” resolves toward optimism, eventually battened down by the slow, accumulating growl of Takuro Okada’s guitar pushed into overdrive. The Near End, The Dark Night, The County Line thrives on contradiction: gentle envelopes of guitar hum and rippling water samples are interrupted by eddies of metallic noise, only to slip again into a stream of soft cymbal edges and Okada’s patient tremolo. At times the record drifts into spaghetti-western territory, evoking a dusted-off Ennio Morricone score; elsewhere it settles into a hazy morning light, filtering through the warped wood of a dusty bayou saloon, complete with a distant dog’s howl. The album travels far without ever feeling restless, and we are left immersed in a soundscape that evolves gently, serene and quietly joyful.

If you’d asked me twenty years ago whether I would have spent even a few minutes with a record like this, I’d have laughed the very idea away. I was dumb! There’s an entire world of beautiful music I was too closed off to know how to hear. On Big Ugly, sweeping guitar lines punctuated with pedal steel are grounded by singer Aaron Dowdy’s conversational baritone, while strings and piano anchor the blue-collar lament of “Doghole,” a sentiment that runs throughout the North Carolina band’s songs. Like their fellow North Carolina musical travelers Wednesday, the band write with a clear eye for place, digging into everyday American life and its quiet, accumulating pains to create music that feels both timely and deeply human.Listen if you like:&nbsp;David Berman’s everyday observation, Will Oldham, Jason Molina’s folk/Americana peregrinations

I can picture exactly when it would have lived in my headphones—angry, sad, jubilant, sometimes all at once. Asheville, North Carolina’s Wednesday, like their perhaps more cosmopolitan counterparts Geese (who arguably also deserve a place on this list), have earned the wave of praise surrounding their recent output. Country filtered through pop-punk energy and bursts of full-throttle overdrive, Bleeds is a warped tour of the contemporary American South. Descended from bands like Drive-By Truckers, Dinosaur Jr., Modest Mouse, and Pavement, singer Karly Hartzman leads a group of accomplished young musicians (including MJ Lenderman) to make something that feels at once urgent and generous, nostalgic and unmistakably new.Listen if you like:&nbsp; Drive-By Truckers, Dinosaur Jr., Modest Mouse, Pavement, and&nbsp;MJ Lenderman
